Sunny Rae Breland

"Somewhere along the way, I disappear into the whole of humanity, recognizing our inseparable nature. It becomes a dance between the collective and the self; between the paint and inter-being."
Sunny Rae Breland deconstructs concepts of humanity through reduced figurative expressions. Ubiquitous emotions transform into subjective interpretations, echoing the dichotomous relationship between the collective and the self.
Breland engages loose, heavy paint to depict ambiguous figures in space. Shapes and spontaneous mark-making become suggestions of the human form and its features.
After beginning her academic career in the direction of cultural anthropology, Breland shifted her concentration to the arts.
The collegiate transition, became an extension of the previous intent. Through her body of work, she continues to study, first-hand, the same anthropological foundations that shape humanity while simultaneously exploring its intangible spirit.
Breland currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Lamar University.
